FIELD GUIDE

How to unlock medium and heavy armor proficiency

Medium armor uses Second Skin I; heavy armor uses Second Skin II. Each needs its final rank to remove the matching proficiency penalty. For a complete route through both, learn Vigour rank 1, finish Second Skin I, then finish Second Skin II. You will need one I manual and three II manuals.

Check the warning on the armor you want to wear

You can wear medium or heavy armor before reaching full proficiency, but its stats carry a penalty. Open the item description and check whether it says Medium or Heavy, then look for the proficiency warning.

In ESO’s armor example at 8:45, a Puresteel Plate shows a heavy-armor warning and a 30% stat penalty. That is a displayed heavy-armor example, not a promise that every red number on every armor piece means the same thing. The item’s level is also separate from your skill progress.

Keep the two checks separate: a proficiency warning tells you that you lack the matching training; red comparison numbers can still appear because a new item has different stats from your equipped one.

Follow the medium-to-heavy route and budget each rank

Both perks sit in Swordmastery and work during the day and at night. Second Skin I reduces medium-armor penalties; Second Skin II reduces heavy-armor penalties. For a route that finishes medium training before heavy training, follow Vigour rank 1 → Second Skin I rank 3 → Second Skin II rank 3. Stop after I if medium armor is your only goal.

Second Skin IIRanks 1, 2 and 3; full heavy proficiency1 + 1 + 2 = 43 time segments

This medium-then-heavy route budgets 9 skill points. The two Second Skin perks consume 6 time segments, with Vigour’s learning time still to check separately. These are game time segments, not real-world hours; travel and waiting are outside the budget. Subtract ranks you already own.

This is a route for completing both armor types, not a minimum-cost heavy-armor route. The cited sources do not establish the lowest Second Skin I rank that permits a Second Skin II purchase. Finishing I here secures medium proficiency before you continue; it is not a claim that I rank 3 is the minimum prerequisite.

Game8’s proficiency guide supplies the Vigour entry step and rank costs. ESO’s 9:03–9:07 panels show the different manual gates: I’s final rank and all three II ranks.

Find the right Second Skin manual

Book checklist: one Second Skin I manual for full medium proficiency; three Second Skin II manuals for full heavy proficiency. The complete medium-then-heavy route uses four manuals. Reading them opens the gated rank upgrades; you still pay skill points and learning time.

Second Skin I’s first two ranks do not need its manual; one copy opens the final rank, as explained in GamingAlly’s medium-armor guide. For II, collect three manuals for its three gated rank upgrades. GameRant’s heavy-armor guide explicitly gives the three-copy requirement. One II manual does not open all three ranks.

Choose a shop you can already reach. On the map, look for the white armor icon. Check the item’s full name before buying: Second Skin I is for medium armor; Second Skin II is for heavy armor.

PowerPyx’s armorer map and shop list gives the merchant locations and daytime restrictions. If a daytime shop is empty, return in the day before spending time looking for a different vendor.

For the three heavy-armor manuals, check the three II vendors above as you reach them. Quest Daily’s three-copy route includes a purchase in Tantari and finds in Silts Tower and on a bandit. Treat the loot finds as reported alternatives; a particular corpse is not a guaranteed source. The listed shops give you specific places to check without relying on a random enemy drop.

If a vendor has no copy left, check another listed shop or your existing manuals. Check the price in your own trading screen; this guide does not assume a fixed price or an unlimited restock.

Learn the named nodes at a shrine, then check the armor

  1. Open Swordmastery at a shrine and learn Vigour rank 1. Budget 1 skill point for this entry step. Check its displayed time cost before confirming; the sources here do not establish that cost.
  2. Learn Second Skin I ranks 1 and 2. Each costs 1 point and 1 time segment. These two ranks do not require a Second Skin I manual.
  3. Read one Second Skin I manual, then learn I rank 3. Open Manuals & Recipes in the inventory and read the book. At the shrine, purchase the final I rank for 2 points and 1 time segment. Check the learned-rank indicator. You now have the perk’s full medium-armor penalty reduction.
  4. Continue down the branch to Second Skin II for heavy armor. Read your Second Skin II manuals to open its three gated upgrades. For each rank, confirm the gate has opened before buying it at the shrine: rank 1 costs 1 point, rank 2 costs 1 point, and rank 3 costs 2 points. Each purchase uses 1 time segment; completing all three needs three II manuals.
  5. Verify the finished rank, then return to the armor. For medium armor, check I rank 3; for heavy armor, check II rank 3. Reopen the same item and check the proficiency warning. Reading a manual makes a rank available; it does not replace the learning purchase.

This sequence follows the complete medium-then-heavy route above. It combines the skill panels with published learning instructions; it is not an uninterrupted gameplay recording of our own. Use the button prompts shown by your game.

Return to the item and check the result

Reopen the same armor piece after learning. Check the matching proficiency warning and the skill’s learned rank, rather than treating every red comparison value as a failed upgrade.

Full proficiency lets you assess the armor without that training penalty. It does not make every heavy piece a better choice for your setup. Keep the bonuses you actually use in mind, and use the combat guide if the remaining problem is blocking, dodging, or stamina management.

Questions before you continue

Does Second Skin work at night?

Yes. Both Second Skin I and II are marked Anytime on the displayed skill panels. Choose the perk for the armor type, rather than for your current day or night form.

Does 100% penalty reduction mean 100% damage reduction?

No. It removes the matching armor proficiency penalty. It does not make Coen immune to damage.

Which shop sells both Second Skin manuals?

The Svartrau marketplace armorer is listed with both I and II. Visit during the day, enter the house in the middle of the market, and go upstairs.
