Brencis final boss: Knyaz and Grotesque Ascendant

Emptying Brencis’s first health bar starts another fight. Use the attack indicators in the Knyaz phase, then reset your spacing when the Grotesque Ascendant appears with longer limbs and a new health bar. This guide follows the recorded late-game encounter with Lacra.

Start from the final confrontation

Final-boss spoilers: this walkthrough begins inside Brencis’s castle at the confrontation. It does not cover winning the prologue fight or obtaining every ending. If you are still outside, use the castle-entry guide first.

In the recorded Lacra route, choose “Just draw your blade, Brencis.” to proceed into combat. Other choices are visible, but their outcomes are outside this walkthrough. Confirm that the boss bar reads Brencis, the Knyaz of Vale Sangora before following phase one.

The examples below are reactions visible in this playthrough, not exact timing tests. The recording’s game build and difficulty have not been verified. A particular weapon, character level, Charge rank or damage total is not established as a requirement.

Knyaz phase: read the icon, then reset your position

  1. Shield indicator: prepare to block or parry using your current combat bindings. The icon identifies an attack you can defend against; it does not mean any block timing will produce a perfect block.
  2. Skull indicator: dodge or move clear of the attack instead of relying on a block. Recheck the icon on the next attack; do not assume a whole sequence uses one type.
  3. Red attacks from range: watch Brencis after he opens distance. In the 09:38–09:43 sequence, red arcs travel toward Coen before close combat resumes. Create room and reassess before rushing back.
  4. Return for a short response: attack after the immediate threat passes, then read the next cue. If you keep taking damage during a long counterattack, shorten it instead of repeating the same commitment.

This page does not establish a precise parry delay, safe dodge direction or complete attack list. For the basic controls and icon rules, see combat fundamentals.

The first empty health bar is the transition

Keep playing after the Knyaz bar reaches zero. In the footage, a scripted sequence follows the first depletion around 12:35, then the fight moves to a red arena. The next boss bar reads Brencis, Grotesque Ascendant.

This new bar is the clearest way to identify phase two. Do not mistake the intervening cutscene for the end of the encounter, or expect the spacing that worked against the humanoid form to remain safe.

Grotesque Ascendant: allow for longer reach

  1. Re-establish distance when the new bar appears. His branching limbs reach farther than the humanoid sword exchanges shown earlier.
  2. Watch the whole approach. In the 13:47–13:54 example, he closes space, the player moves sideways, and only then returns with short attacks. Use the visible recovery as a cue to reassess; this is not a guaranteed punish duration.
  3. Keep checking skull indicators. A large body or familiar wind-up is not a reason to hold block against an unblockable attack.
  4. Let the sequence finish before committing again. Around 15:04–15:11, the red effects continue across several movements while Coen makes space. If the follow-up catches you, delay your return and use a shorter counter.

These examples do not establish a fixed number of hits per combo. Watch the current animation and indicator rather than counting a pattern assumed from another attempt.

Confirm the fight has ended

After the Grotesque Ascendant’s bar empties, the footage shows a scripted finisher and then dialogue with Brencis in the red arena. That is the combat completion shown here. The remaining conversations and wider ending depend on story choices and are covered separately in the endings guide.

If your run differs, first check which boss name is on screen and whether a cutscene is still playing. This guide does not verify a fix for a stalled transition, a checkpoint reload rule or a way to change an earlier alliance from inside the fight.

Questions before you continue

Why does Brencis get another health bar?

The Knyaz phase transitions into Brencis, Grotesque Ascendant. The cutscene after the first bar empties does not finish this recorded encounter.

Does this also cover defeating Brencis in the prologue?

No. The source is a late-game confrontation with Lacra. Prologue access, starting-gear tactics and the consequences of an early win need a separate walkthrough.
